The creator
Oette, an alias, chosen for the creative part of my activities. The name Oette is specific to my father’s family where art painting originates.
I was born (1951) and raised in Amsterdam. I lived opposite the Stedelijk Museum of modern art, which I frequently visited as a child and where I felt at home. My interest goes back to my childhood.
I followed courses from teachers like Maarten Krabbe sr., Boy Namias de Castro and Mijntje Strengholt. I experienced differt styles and techniques, from fine painting to large works in expressive abstaction. Gradually I developed my own signature.
Simultaniously I studied arthistory and architectural history at the Vrije University of Amsterdam, looking for a theoretical fundament. Confrontation with the work of famous artists brought humility, as well as enthusiasm and inspiration.
Artwork
The first idea for a painting is summoned by a color, a line, a form. I act intuitively, without a pre-dominant plan. Coincidence determines my work.
Bit by bit, layer by layer, is added to the canvas. The paint and the subsequent chaos are brought to life, forms appear or instead, fade away. Glimpses of lower layers stay visible. I combine abstract and figurative elements till harmony is reached in form and color.
I work in both Amsterdam and in the South of France.
